The numbers families ask for most.

Permit test passing score

The DMV lists the knowledge test passing score as 80 percent. Passing Lane uses 83 percent because 38 of 46 and 30 of 36 round to about 83 percent. See the guide.

Under 18 permit basics

Teens need to be at least 15 and a half, complete or enroll in driver education, bring identity and residency documents, and have a parent or guardian sign the application. See the checklist.

Before the road test

Teens must hold the permit for at least six months, complete six hours of professional driver training, and practice 50 hours with 10 at night. See requirements.

First year license limits

During the first 12 months, provisional drivers cannot drive from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. or carry passengers under 20 unless a qualifying adult is with them. See parent guide.
